« Chapter 3 »
1
Brothers, not many of you should become teachers, since Allah will judge us teachers with a more severe judgment, as you know.
2
We all make many mistakes. If there is someone among us who does not make mistakes in his words, that is a man who is perfect in righteousness and able to tightly hold the reins of his whole body.
3
We put bits in the mouths of horses so that they will obey us, so we can guide their whole bodies.
4
Ships also, despite their huge size and the strength of stormy winds that push them, are managed by a small rudder wherever the captain wants.
5
In the same way, the tongue is a small member, but it boasts of large matters. Look how great is the forest that is burned by a small spark.
6
The tongue is fire and a world of evil that stands among our members. It defiles the whole body, and burns the whole cycle of life. It is burned by the fire of Jahannam.
7
A person may tame all types of beasts, birds, reptiles, and fish.
8
But no one is able to tame his tongue. It is a defiant evil, overflowing with lethal poison.
10
From one mouth both praise and cursing come out! Brothers, this is not suitable for us at all!
11
Do fresh water and bitter water spring out of the same spring?
12
Brothers, does the fig tree have olives on it? Does the grapevine have figs on it? No! And the spring does not give both salt water and fresh water.
13
Who among you is wise and understanding? He should show his deeds by his good behavior in the meekness of wisdom.
14
But if there is bitter jealousy and selfishness in your hearts, do not boast against the truth and reject it.
16
Wherever there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also discord and all detestable things.
17
But wisdom that is revealed from above is first clear and pure, then peaceful, meek, and tolerant. It is full of mercy and good fruit. It is not hesitant or hypocritical.
18
Righteousness is the harvest of peacemakers who sow in peace.
