« Chapter 9 »

The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. It was given the key of the well of the Abyss.
وَنَفَخَ الْمَلَاكُ الْخَامِسُ فِي صُورِهِ، فَرَأَيْتُ نَجْمًا قَدْ سَقَطَ مِنَ السَّمَاوَاتِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، وَأُعْطِيَ لَهُ مِفْتَاحَ بِئْرِ الْهَاوِيَةِ،

He opened the well of the Abyss and smoke like the smoke of a large furnace came up from it. The sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the Abyss.
فَفَتَحَ بِئْرَ الْهَاوِيَةِ فَصَعِدَ دُخَانٌ مِنْهَا كَدُخَانِ فُرْنٍ كَبِيرٍ، فَأَظْلَمَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَالْهَوَاءُ مِنْ دُخَانِ الْهَاوِيَةِ.

Locusts came out of the smoke onto the earth. They were given the power to sting like scorpions of the earth.
وَخَرَجَ مِنَ الدُّخَانِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ جَرَادٌ، وَأُعْطِيَتْ لَهُ قُوَّةَ لَدْغِ عَقَارِبِ الْأَرْضِ،

They were told not to harm the grass, the plants, or the trees. Rather, they should only harm people who do not have the seal of Allah on their foreheads.
وَقِيلَ لَهُ أَلَّا يَضُرَّ الْعُشْبَ وَلَا النَّبَاتَاتِ وَلَا الشَّجَرَ بَلْ فَقَطْ يَضُرَّ الْبَشَرَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَحْمِلُونَ خَتْمَ اللهِ عَلَى جِبَاهِهِمْ،

They were allowed to torture people for five months, but not to kill them. That torture is like the torture of a scorpion's sting.
وَأُعْطِيَ لَهُ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَ النَّاسَ خَمْسَةَ أَشْهُرٍ دُونَ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُمْ، وَذَلِكَ الْعَذَابُ كَعَذَابِ لَدْغَةِ الْعَقْرَبِ.

In those days, people will wish they could die and they will beg to die, but they will find no way to do so, since that will be beyond their grasp.
وَفِي تِلْكَ الْأَيَّامِ يَتَمَنَّى النَّاسُ الْمَوْتَ وَيَنْشُدُونَهُ، لَكِنْ لَنْ يَجِدُوا لَهُ سَبِيلًا إِذْ سَيَكُونُ بَعِيدَ الْمَنَالِ.

Those locusts look like horses that are prepared for war. There were things like golden crowns on their heads, and their faces were semi-human.
وَيُشْبِهُ هَذَا الْجَرَادُ خُيُولًا مُهَيَّأَةً لِلْحَرْبِ، عَلَى رُؤُوسِهَا مَا يُشْبِهُ تِيجَانًا مِنَ الذَّهَبِ، وَوُجُوهُهَا شِبْهُ بَشَرِيَّةٍ،

Their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.
وَشَعْرُهَا كَشَعْرِ النِّسَاءِ، وَأَسْنَانُهَا كَأَسْنَانِ الْأُسُودِ،

They had breastplates as strong as iron, and the sound of their wings was as loud as many war chariots and their horses as they rush to battle.
وَلَهَا دُرُوعٌ قَوِيَّةٌ كَالْحَدِيدِ، وَصَوْتُ أَجْنِحَتِهَا عَالٍ كَصَوْتِ مَرْكَبَاتٍ حَرْبِيَّةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ وَخُيُولُهَا تَنْدَفِعُ إِلَى الْمَعْرَكَةِ،

They have tails that sting like scorpions. Their power to torture people for five months is in their tails.
وَلَهَا أَذْنَابٌ تَلْدَغُ كَالْعَقَارِبِ، وَفِي أَذْنَابِهَا قُوَّةٌ لِتُعَذِّبَ النَّاسَ خَمْسَةَ أَشْهُرٍ،

The first woe is thus finished, and two other woes will follow it.
وَبِهَذَا انْتَهَى الْوَيْلُ الْأَوَّلُ، يَلِيهِ وَيْلَانِ آخَرَانِ.

The sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the golden incense burner that is in front of Allah.
وَنَفَخَ الْمَلَاكُ السَّادِسُ فِي صُورِهِ، فَسَمِعْتُ صَوْتًا مِنَ الْمِبْخَرَةِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِ الَّتِي أَمَامَ اللهِ،

It said to the sixth angel that was carrying the trumpet: "Loosen the bonds of the four angels that are tied at the great Euphrates River."
يَقُولُ لِلْمَلَاكِ السَّادِسِ حَامِلِ الصُّورِ: «حُلَّ رِبَاطَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ الْمَرْبُوطِينَ عِنْدَ نَهْرِ الْفُرَاتِ الْكَبِيرِ.»

So the angels were released. They had been prepared for this hour, day, month, and year to kill a third of Bani Adam.
فَتَمَّ إِطْلَاقُ سَرَاحِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا قَدْ أُعِدُّوا لِهَذِهِ السَّاعَةِ وَالْيَوْمِ وَالشَّهْرِ وَالسَّنَةِ لِيَقْتُلُوا ثُلْثَ بَنِي آدَمَ.

I heard the number of the horsemen: two hundred million horsemen.
وَسَمِعْتُ عَدَدَ فُرْسَانِ الْجَيْشِ، فَكَانُوا مِائَتَيْ مِلْيُونِ فَارِسٍ.

I saw in a vision that the horses, their horsemen, and their breastplates were colored fire red, smoky blue, and sulphur yellow. The heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and fire, smoke, and sulphur came out of their mouths.
وَرَأَيْتُ فِي الرُّؤْيَا الْخُيُولَ وَفُرْسَانَهَا وَدُرُوعَهُمُ الْمُلَوَّنَةَ بِأَحْمَرَ نَارِيٍّ وَأَزْرَقَ دُخَانِيٍّ وَأَصْفَرَ كِبْرِيتِيٍّ، وَكَانَتْ رُؤُوسُ الْخُيُولِ تُشْبِهُ رُؤُوسَ الْأُسُودِ، وَمِنْ أَفْوَاهِهَا تَخْرُجُ النَّارُ وَالدُّخَانُ وَالْكِبْرِيتُ.

A third of Bani Adam died because of the three calamities: the fire, the smoke, and the sulphur coming out of their mouths.
فَكَانَ أَنْ مَاتَ ثُلْثُ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَلَايَا الثَّلَاثِ: مِنَ النَّارِ وَالدُّخَانِ وَالْكِبْرِيتِ الْخَارِجَةِ مِنْ أَفْوَاهِهَا،

The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails. Their tails looked like snakes with harmful heads.
وَكَانَتْ قُوَّةُ الْخُيُولِ فِي أَفْوَاهِهَا وَفِي أَذْنَابِهَا، وَأَذْنَابُهَا تُشْبِهُ حَيَّاتٍ لَهَا رُؤُوسٌ مُؤْذِيَةٌ.

The rest of the people who did not die from these calamities did not repent from the works their hands had done. They also did not stop worshipping jinn and idols made out of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, even though they do not see, hear, or walk.
أَمَّا بَقِيَّةُ النَّاسِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَمُوتُوا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَلَايَا، فَلَمْ يَتُوبُوا عَمَّا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ وَلَمْ يَتَوَقَّفُوا عَنْ عِبَادَةِ الْجِنِّ وَالْأَصْنَامِ الْمَصْنُوعَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَالنُّحَاسِ وَالْحَجَرِ وَالْخَشَبِ، رَغْمَ أَنَّهَا لَا تُبْصِرُ وَلَا تَسْمَعُ وَلَا تَمْشِي،

They also did not repent from murder, magic, sexual immorality, and stealing.
كَمَا لَمْ يَتُوبُوا عَنِ الْقَتْلِ وَالسِّحْرِ وَالْفَحْشَاءِ وَالسَّرِقَةِ.
