«   Chapter 2   »

1
Brothers, do not treat people with favoritism, if you are believers in our glorious mawla Isa Al-Masih.
2
Suppose a rich man with splendid clothing comes in to your jama'a and then a poor man with worn-out clothing enters.
3
Suppose also that you pay attention to the person with the splendid clothing and tell him: "Please sit here in the best chair!" while you tell the poor person: "Stand over there!" or: "Sit on the floor!"
4
Have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil intentions?
5
Beloved brothers, listen! Has Allah not chosen the poor of this world, and made them rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that has been promised to those who love Allah?
6
But you have insulted the poor man! Are rich people not the ones who treat you unjustly and take you to court?
7
Are they not the people who deny the honorable name that you were called to belong to?
8
You will do a good deed if you closely follow the royal sharia, which contains the honorable verse: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
9
But if you show favoritism to anyone, you have sinned, and the just judgment of the sharia against you is that you are transgressors.
10
The person who closely follows the whole sharia, except he slips up in one matter has violated it all.
11
Allah, who said: "Do not commit adultery" also said: "Do not kill." If you do not commit adultery, but do kill, you have violated the sharia.
12
Therefore, the sharia of freedom will judge you. So let what you say and do be consistent with that.
13
There is no mercy in judgment for the person who does not show mercy, but mercy is victorious over judgment.
14
Brothers, if anyone claims that he has faith, and does not do deeds that show his faith, is there any benefit in that? Can that faith save him?
15
If there is someone among the brothers or sisters who lacks clothing or daily food,
16
and one of you tells them: "May Allah be with you. Be warm and full," without giving him what his body needs, is there any benefit in that?
17
So, faith itself without deeds is dead.
18
Someone may say: "You have faith and I have deeds." Show me how you can have faith without deeds, and I will show you faith through my deeds.
19
You believe that there is no god except Allah. Well done! But the devils believe also, and tremble in fear.
20
You jahil, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is dead?
21
Did not Allah account Ibrahim our father as righteous by his deeds when he offered his son Ishaq on the altar?
22
You see that faith was interwoven with his deeds, and by his deeds, his faith was completed,
23
and the promise of Allah in the kitab was fulfilled: "Ibrahim trusted in Allah, and he accounted him as righteous," and he called him the friend of Allah.
24
Thus we see how Allah accounts a person righteous by his deeds and not only by his faith.
25
In the same way, did Allah not account Rahab the prostitute righteous by her deeds when she welcome the messengers and returned them by another way?
26
As the body without the spirit is dead, thus faith without deeds is dead.
