« Chapter 4 »

Where do fights and quarrels among you come from? Are they not from your passions that are at war in your members?
مِنْ أَيْنَ هَذَا الصِّرَاعُ وَالْخِصَامُ فِيمَا بَيْنَكُمْ؟ أَلَيْسَ مِنْ شَهَوَاتِكُمُ الْمُتَحَارِبَةِ فِي أَعْضَائِكُمْ؟

You passionately want things that you do not own, and you kill. You envy and cannot obtain them, so you fight and quarrel. You do not own because you do not ask.
تَشْتَهُونَ الْأَشْيَاءَ الَّتِي لَا تَمْتَلِكُونَهَا فَتَقْتُلُونَ، وَتَحْسُدُونَ وَلَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ الْحُصُولَ عَلَيْهَا فَتَتَخَاصَمُونَ وَتَتَصَارَعُونَ. لَا تَمْتَلِكُونَ لِأَنَّكُمْ لَا تَطْلُبُونَ،

And you ask and do not receive because your intentions are evil. You ask to satisfy your passions.
وَتَطْلُبُونَ وَلَا تَنَالُونَ لِأَنَّ نِيَّاتَكُمْ شَرِيرَةٌ، إِذْ تَطْلُبُونَ لِإِشْبَاعِ شَهَوَاتِكُمْ.

You who are betraying Allah are like adulteresses. Do you not know that friendship with this world is enmity against Allah? A person who wants to be a friend of this world has made himself an enemy of Allah.
يَا مَنْ تَخُونُونَ اللهَ إِنَّكُمْ تَشْبَهُونَ الزَّانِيَاتِ، أَلَا تَعْرِفُونَ أَنَّ صَدَاقَةَ الدُّنْيَا هِيَ عَدَاوَةٌ لِلهِ؟ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَكُونَ صَدِيقَ الدُّنْيَا، فَقَدْ جَعَلَ نَفْسَهُ عَدُوًّا لِلهِ.

وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ يُنْعِمُ عَلَيْنَا فَضْلًا أَعْظَمَ، لِذَلِكَ أَنْزَلَ فِي كِتَابِهِ: «يُقَاوِمُ اللهُ الْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ وَيُنْعِمُ بِفَضْلِهِ عَلَى الْمُتَوَاضِعِينَ.»

So submit to Allah and be subject to him. Resist Iblis and he will flee from you.
فَأَسْلِمُوا لِلهِ خَاضِعِينَ. قَاوِمُوا إِبْلِيسَ فَيَهْرُبَ مِنْكُمْ.

Approach Allah and Allah will approach you. Sinners, cleanse your hands. You hesitant people, purify your hearts.
اِقْتَرِبُوا مِنَ اللهِ فَيَتَقَرَّبَ اللهُ مِنْكُمْ. أَيُّهَا الْمُذْنِبُونَ، نَقُّوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ. أَيُّهَا الْمُتَرَدِّدُونَ، طَهِّرُوا قُلُوبَكُمْ.

Be sad, mourn, and cry. Let your laughing be changed to mourning and your joy to misery.
اِحْزَنُوا وَنُوحُوا وَابْكُوا. لِيَنْقَلِبْ ضِحْكُكُمْ مَنَاحَةً وَفَرَحُكُمْ بُؤْسًا.

Be humble in front of Rabb Al-Alamin and he will raise you up.
تَوَاضَعُوا أَمَامَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ فَيَرْفَعَكُمْ.

Brothers, do not slander each other. The person who slanders and condemns his brother slanders the sharia and condemns it. And if you condemn the sharia, you are not a doer of the sharia but a condemner of it.
أَيُّهَا الْإِخْوَةُ، لَا تَغْتَابُوا بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا. مَنِ اغْتَابَ أَخَاهُ أَوَ حَكَمَ عَلَيْهِ، اِغْتَابَ الشَّرِيعَةَ وَحَكَمَ عَلَيْهَا، وَإِذَا حَكَمْتَ عَلَى الشَّرِيعَةِ فَلَسْتَ عَامِلًا بِالشَّرِيعَةِ بَلْ حَاكِمًا عَلَيْهَا.

You people who say, "We will go to a city today or tomorrow, live there for a year, trade and make a profit," come to a word:
وَأَنْتُمْ أَيُّهَا الْقَائِلُونَ: «سَنَذْهَبُ إِلَى مَدِينَةٍ مَا الْيَوْمَ أَوْ غَدًا، وَنُقِيمُ هُنَاكَ سَنَةً، وَنُتَاجِرُ وَنَرْبَحُ،» تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ:

You do not know anything about your life tomorrow. You are only a breath of fog that appears for a little while and then disappears.
أَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْرِفُونَ شَيْئًا عَنْ حَيَاتِكُمْ فِي الْغَدِ، لَسْتُمْ سِوَى نَفْخَةِ ضَبَابٍ تَظْهَرُ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ تَخْتَفِي.

Instead of that, you must say: "Inshallah we will live and do this or that thing."
عِوَضًا عَنْ ذَلِكَ يَجِبُ أَنْ تَقُولُوا: «إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ، نَعِيشُ وَنَعْمَلُ هَذَا الشَّيْءَ أَوْ ذَاكَ.»

But you boast in your pride. All this boasting is evil.
لَكِنَّكُمْ تَفْتَخِرُونَ فِي تَكَبُّرِكُمْ، وَهَذَا الِافْتِخَارُ كُلُّهُ هُوَ شَرٌّ،

For whoever knows the way of righteousness and does not walk in it is a sinner.
لِأَنَّ مَنْ يَعْرِفُ طَرِيقَ الصَّلَاحِ وَلَا يَسِيرُ فِيهِ فَهُوَ مُذْنِبٌ.
