« Chapter 4 »
1
Again he began teaching by the lake. A large crowd gathered around him, so he got into a boat. He sat in the boat teaching the crowds.
2
There he taught them many things using stories. He said,
4
As he was sowing, some seed fell on the path, and the birds attacked it and ate it.
5
Some of it fell on rocky ground with shallow soil. It sprouted immediately because it did not have much soil.
6
When the sun came up, it was burned. Since it did not have any roots, it dried up.
7
Some of it fell among thorns that sprouted and choked it, and it produced no fruit.
9
Then he said, "Anyone with ears that hear, listen!"
10
And when he was alone, the people who were around him with the hawariyun asked him about the stories.
14
The farmer sows the word.
16
Similarly, these are the ones sown among the rocks: When they hear the word, they accept it immediately with joy.
17
They have no root in themselves, but they last only a little time. Then when they face difficulties or persecution because of the word, immediately they fall away.
18
And others are the ones that are sown among thorns: They hear the word,
19
but the worries of this world, the love of riches, and other desires come along. They choke the word, and it does not produce fruit.
20
And these are the ones that are sown in good soil: Everyone who hears the word and accepts it. They produce thirty, sixty, or one hundred times as much."
21
Then he said to them, "Is a lamp brought inside to be put under a basket or a bed? No. It is brought in to be put on a lamp stand.
22
Nothing is hidden that will not be revealed. And nothing is secret that will not be made clear.
23
Anyone with ears that hear, listen!"
24
He told them, "Take care what you hear! With the measure you use, it will be measured to you - and more.
26
He said, "The kingdom of Allah is like a man who sows seed on the ground.
28
By itself, the earth bears fruit -- first the stalk, then the head, then the fully ripened grain in the head.
31
It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground. It is the smallest of seeds on earth.
33
He spoke the word to them with many such stories as they were able to hear.
34
He spoke to them only in stories, but he explained everything to his hawariyun in private.
35
After sunset that day, he told them, "Let us go to the other shore."
36
So they left the crowd, and the hawariyun took him in the boat just as he was. And other boats were with them.
37
Then there was a strong wind, and the waves beat on the boat.
38
Isa was sleeping on a pillow in the back of the boat, and they woke him, saying, "Teacher, do you not care if we die?"
39
He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" The wind stopped and there was a great calm.
40
Isa said to them, "Why were you afraid? Do you still have no trust?"
41
They were terrified and said to each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"
