When the appointment for us to sail to Italy had been set, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to an officer named Julius, commander of one hundred soldiers in the regiment of his majesty Caesar.
عِنْدَمَا تَقَرَّرَ مَوْعِدُ إِبْحَارِنَا إِلَى إِيطَالِيَا، سَلَّمُوا بَاوُلَ وَبَعْضَ السُّجَنَاءِ الْآخَرِينَ إِلَى ضَابِطٍ وَهُوَ قَائِدٌ لِمِائَةِ جُنْدِيٍّ ضِمْنَ كَتِيبَةِ جَلَالَةِ الْقَيْصَرِ اسْمُهُ يُولِي،

فَرَكِبْنَا سَفِينَةً مِنْ أَدْرَامِيتَ فِي طَرِيقِهَا إِلَى مَرَافِئَ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ عَلَى شَاطِئِ آسْيَا الصُّغْرَى. أَبْحَرْنَا وَكَانَ مَعَنَا آرِسْتَرْخُ المَقِدُونِيُّ مِنْ تَسَالُونِيقَا،

The next day, we arrived to Sidon, and Julius in his kindness allowed Paul to visit his friends so that they could take care of him.
وَفِي الْغَدِ وَصَلْنَا إِلَى صَيْدَا فَسَمَحَ يُولِي مِنْ لُطْفِهِ لِبَاوُلَ أَنْ يَزُورَ أَصْدِقَاءَهُ حَتَّى يَعْتَنُوا بِهِ.

From there, we sailed near to Cyprus on the north, protected from the headwinds.
وَمِنْ هُنَاكَ أَبْحَرْنَا عَلَى مَقْرُبَةٍ مِنْ قُبْرُصَ شَمَالًا مَحْجُوبِينَ مِنَ الرِّيَاحِ الْمُعَاكِسَةِ،

We crossed the sea many times across from Cilicia and Pamphylia, and arrived to Myra in Lycia.
وَعَبَرْنَا الْبَحْرَ مِرَارًا مُقَابِلَ كِيلِيكِيَّةَ وَبَمْفِيلِيَّةَ، حَتَّى وَصَلْنَا إِلَى مِيرَا فِي لِيكِيَّةَ،

There the officer found a ship from Alexandria headed to Italy and we boarded it.
وَهُنَاكَ وَجَدَ الضَّابِطُ سَفِينَةً إِسْكَنْدَرَانِيَّةً مُتَّجِهَةً إِلَى إِيطَالِيَا فَأَرْكَبَنَا فِيهَا.

Our trip was slow and after many days we arrived with difficulty to a place near Cnidus, because the winds prevented us from continuing. So we sailed near Crete opposite Salmone, protected from the winds.
وَكَانَ سَفَرُنَا بَطِيئًا حَيْثُ وَصَلْنَا بَعْدَ أَيَّامٍ عَدِيدَةٍ إِلَى مَكَانٍ بِالْقُرْبِ مِنْ كِنِيدَ وَذَلِكَ بِصُعُوبَةٍ إِذْ مَنَعَتْنَا الرِّيَاحُ مِنَ الْمُتَابَعَةِ، فَأَبْحَرْنَا بِالْقُرْبِ مِنْ كِرِيتَ مُقَابِلَ سَلْمُونَةَ مَحْجُوبِينَ مِنَ الرِّيَاحِ،

We continued our trip, and then with difficulty arrived at a port called "Fair Havens" near the city of Lasea.
وَتَابَعْنَا الرِّحْلَةَ، ثُمَّ بِصُعُوبَةٍ وَصَلْنَا إِلَى مِينَاءٍ يُدْعَى «الْمَوَانِئَ الْجَمِيلَةَ» قُرْبَ بَلْدَةِ لَاسِيَا.

وَقَدْ مَرَّ عَلَيْنَا زَمَانٌ طَوِيلٌ، وَأَصْبَحَ سَفَرُنَا مَحْفُوفًا بِالْخَطْرِ إِذْ كَانَ مَوْعِدُ صِيَامِ الْخَرِيفِ قَدِ انْتَهَى فَنَصَحَ بَاوُلُ الْبَحَّارَةَ قَائِلًا:

"Men, it seems to me that there will be a disaster in this trip, and a great loss, of the cargo, the ship, and our lives."
«أَيُّهَا الرِّجَالُ، يَبْدُو لِي أَنَّ فِي هَذَا السَّفَرِ كَارِثَةً وَخَسَارَةً كَثِيرَةً لَا بِالنِّسْبَةِ لِلْحُمُولَةِ وَالسَّفِينَةِ فَقَطْ بَلْ لِحَيَاتِنَا أَيْضًا.»

But the officer tended to follow the opinion of the captain and the owner of the ship more than what Paul said.
لَكِنَّ الضَّابِطَ كَانَ يَمِيلُ إِلَى رَأْيِ الْقُبْطَانِ وَصَاحِبِ السَّفِينَةِ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا كَانَ يَمِيلُ إِلَى قَوْلِ بَاوُلَ.

The port was not suitable to spend the winter in, so the majority decided to sail to the port of Phoenix on Crete, which faces southwest and northwest. They wanted to spend the winter there.
وَإِذْ كَانَ الْمِينَاءُ لَا يَلِيقُ لِقَضَاءِ فَصْلِ الشِّتَاءِ، فَقَدْ قَرَّرَتِ الْأَغْلَبِيَّةُ الْإِبْحَارَ إِلَى مِينَاءِ فِينِكْسَ الْكِرِيتِيِّ الَّذِي يُطِلُّ عَلَى الْجَنُوبِ الْغَرْبِيِّ وَالشَّمَالِ الْغَرْبِيِّ حَتَّى يَقْضُوا الشِّتَاءَ هُنَاكَ.

Then a mild southern wind blew and they thought that it would allow them to achieve their goal. So they raised the anchor and went parallel to the coast of Crete.
ثُمَّ هَبَّتْ رِيحٌ جَنُوبِيَّةٌ خَفِيفَةٌ فَظَنُّوا أَنَّهَا سَتُمَكِّنُهُمْ مِنْ تَحْقِيقِ هَدَفِهِمْ فَرَفَعُوا الْمِرْسَاةَ وَسَارُوا بِمُحَاذَاةِ شَاطِئِ كِرِيتَ،

But then a hurricane-force wind from the northeast blew from Crete.
لَكِنَّ رِيحًا زَوْبَعِيَّةً شَمَالِيَّةً شَرْقِيَّةً هَاجَتْ مِنْ جِهَةِ كِرِيتَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ،

The ship could not resist it because it was so strong. So we let it guide us and take us along.
وَلَمْ تَسْتَطِعِ السَّفِينَةُ مُقَاوَمَتَهَا مِنْ شِدَّتِهَا، فَأَسْلَمْنَا إِلَيْهَا الْقِيَادَةَ وَهِيَ تَمْضِي بِنَا،

Then we arrived to a small island called Cauda. We controlled the lifeboat with difficulty.
حَتَّى وَصَلْنَا إِلَى جَزِيرَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ اسْمُهَا كُودَا، وَبِصُعُوبَةٍ سَيْطَرْنَا عَلَى قَارِبِ النَّجَاةِ فِي السَّفِينَةِ،

The sailors lifted it up and tied the ship with ropes to save it, because they were afraid we would crash into the sandy Libyan coast. Then they raised the anchor and let the wind push it.
فَرَفَعَهُ الْبَحَّارَةُ ثُمَّ رَبَطُوا السَّفِينَةَ بِحِبَالٍ لِإِنْقَاذِهَا. وَإِذْ خَافُوا الِاصْطِدَامَ بِالسَّاحِلِ اللِّيبِيِّ الرَّمْلِيِّ، أَنْزَلُوا مِرْسَاةَ السَّفِينَةِ وَتَرَكُوا الرِّيحَ تَدْفَعُهَا.

The sun and stars did not appear for many days, and the pressure of the storm became harsher. So we lost all hope of saving our lives.
وَلَمْ يَظْهَرْ لِلشَّمْسِ وَلَا لِلنُّجُومِ أَثَرٌ خِلَالَ أَيَّامٍ عَدِيدَةٍ، وَاشْتَدَّ عَلَيْنَا ضَغْطُ الْعَاصِفَةِ، فَفَقَدْنَا كُلَّ أَمَلٍ فِي نَجَاةِ حَيَاتِنَا.

The travelers fasted for a long time. Then Paul stood up and said, "Men, if you had listened to my words, we would not have sailed from Crete. This disaster and loss would not have happened to us.
وَظَلَّ الْمُسَافِرُونَ صَائِمِينَ مُدَّةً طَوِيلَةً، ثُمَّ قَامَ بَاوُلُ وَقَالَ: «أَيُّهَا الرِّجَالُ، لَوْ كُنْتُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ كَلَامِي، لَمَا كُنَّا أَبْحَرْنَا مِنْ كِرِيتَ وَلَمَا أَصَابَتْنَا هَذِهِ الْكَارِثَةُ وَالْخَسَارَةُ،

But listen to my words now and be encouraged! None of you will die when the ship crashes.
لَكِنِ اسْمَعُوا الْآنَ كَلَامِي وَتَشَجَّعُوا! لَنْ يَمُوتَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ عِنْدَ اصْطِدَامِ السَّفِينَةِ.

Last night, an angel from Allah (I belong to him and I am his servant), stood next to me.
فَاللَّيْلَةَ الْمَاضِيَةَ بَدَا وَاقِفًا بِجَانِبِي مَلَاكٌ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللهِ الَّذِي أَنَا عَبْدُهُ وَإِيَّاهُ أَعْبُدُ،

He told me: Paul, do not fear. You must stand in front of Caesar. By the generosity of Allah, all the travelers with you will be saved.
وَلَقَدْ أَخْبَرَنِي قَائِلًا: لَا تَخَفْ يَا بَاوُلُ، عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَقِفَ أَمَامَ الْقَيْصَرِ، وَبِكَرَمٍ مِنَ اللهِ سَيَنْجُو جَمِيعُ الْمُسَافِرِينَ مَعَكَ.

So I have trusted in Allah and that his promise to me will be true. So be encouraged!
فَتَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ وَعَلَى أَنَّ وَعْدَهُ لِي سَيَكُونُ حَقًّا، لِذَلِكَ تَشَجَّعُوا!

But we must crash into some island.
لَكِنَّنَا سَنَصْطَدِمُ لَا مَحَالَةَ بِجَزِيرَةٍ مَا.

On the fourteenth day that the wind pushed us, we were floating in the Adriatic Sea near Italy. At midnight, the sailors thought that they were nearing land.
وَفِي اللَّيْلَةِ الرَّابِعَةَ عَشْرَةَ دَفَعَتْنَا الرِّيحُ طَائِفِينَ فِي بَحْرِ أَدْرِيَا وَهُوَ قَرِيبٌ مِنْ إِيطَالِيَا، وَفِي مُنْتَصَفِ اللَّيْلِ بَدَأَ الْبَحَّارَةُ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَى مَقْرُبَةٍ مِنَ الْبَرِّ،

They were afraid of crashing into the rocks, so they lowered four anchors from the back of the ship. Then they waited for day.
وَخَافُوا مِنَ الِاصْطِدَامِ بِالصُّخُورِ، فَأَنْزَلُوا أَرْبَعَ مَرَاسٍ مِنْ مُؤَخَّرَةِ السَّفِينَةِ وَتَمَنَّوْا طُلُوعَ النَّهَارِ.

Then the sailors pretended that they were lowering the anchors from the front of the ship. They were actually lowering the life boat so they could escape.
ثُمَّ تَظَاهَرَ الْبَحَّارَةُ بِإِنْزَالِ الْمَرَاسِي مِنْ مُقَدَّمَةِ السَّفِينَةِ، لَكِنَّهُمْ أَنْزَلُوا قَارِبَ النَّجَاةِ لِكَيْ يَهْرُبُوا،

Paul warned the officer and the soldiers, "These men must remain in the boat or you cannot be saved."
فَأَنْذَرَ بَاوُلُ الضَّابِطَ وَجُنُودَهُ قَائِلًا: «يَجِبُ أَنْ يَبْقَى هَؤُلَاءِ فِي السَّفِينَةِ وَإِلَّا لَنْ تَنْجُوا أَنْتُمْ.»

The soldiers cut the ropes of the boat and let it fall.
فَقَطَعَ الْجُنُودُ حِبَالَ الْقَارِبِ وَتَرَكُوهُ يَقَعُ.

At dawn, Paul encouraged them all to eat food. He told them, "For fourteen days you have abstained from food because you were worried.
وَعِنْدَ الْفَجْرِ شَجَّعَهُمْ بَاوُلُ أَنْ يَتَنَاوَلُوا الطَّعَامَ جَمِيعًا حَيْثُ قَالَ لَهُمْ: «مُنْذُ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا امْتَنَعْتُمْ عَنِ الْأَكْلِ قَلِقِينَ صَائِمِينَ.

I urge you, eat and get strong so that you may be saved. Not one hair of the heads of any of you will be lost."
فَأَرْجُوكُمْ، كُلُوا وَتَقَوُّوا لِكَيْ تَنْجُوا، إِذْ لَنْ تُهْلَكَ مِنْ رَأْسِ أَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ شَعْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ.»

Then Paul took a loaf, praised and thanked Allah in front of all of them, broke it, and ate.
ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بَاوُلُ رَغِيفًا وَحَمِدَ اللهَ شَاكِرًا أَمَامَهُمْ جَمِيعًا وَكَسَرَهُ وَأَكَلَ.

Everyone was encouraged and ate.
فَتَشَجَّعَ الْجَمِيعُ وَأَكَلُوا،
37
We were two hundred seventy-six people on the boat.
وَقَدْ كُنَّا مِائَتَيْنِ وَسِتَّةً وَسَبْعِينَ شَخْصًا فِي السَّفِينَةِ.
38
When they were full, they threw the remaining wheat in the sea to lighten the boat.
وَعِنْدَمَا شَبِعُوا رَمَوُا الْقَمْحَ الْمُتَبَقِّيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ لِيُخَفِّفُوا السَّفِينَةَ،
39
Then the sun rose. They did not know the place they were, but they saw the beach of a small bay. So they headed for it so that the ship could crash into the sand.
ثُمَّ أَشْرَقَتِ الشَّمْسُ، لَكِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَتَعَرَّفُوا عَلَى الْمَوْقِعِ الَّذِي كَانُوا فِيهِ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُمْ رَأَوْا شَاطِئَ خَلِيجٍ صَغِيرٍ، فَقَصَدُوهُ لَعَلَّ السَّفِينَةَ تَصْطَدِمُ بِالرَّمْلِ،

They left the anchors in the sea, loosened the rudder controls, raised the sail, and headed for the beach of the bay.
إِذْ أَطْلَقُوا الْمَرَاسِيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ وَفَكُّوا ضَوَابِطَ الدَّفَّةِ وَرَفَعُوا الشِّرَاعَ وَاتَّجَهُوا لِشَاطِئِ الْخَلِيجِ.

But because of the shallow water, the front of the ship crashed into a sandbar between the sea and the bay. It got stuck there and the waves began to break the back of the ship.
وَلَكِنَّ مُقَدَّمَةَ السَّفِينَةِ اصْطَدَمَتْ بِسَبَبِ الْمَاءِ الضَّحْلِ بِتَلٍّ رَمْلِيٍّ بَيْنَ بَحْرَيْنِ، فَغَرَزَتْ هُنَاكَ وَبَدَأَتِ الْأَمْوَاجُ تُحَطِّمُ الْمُؤَخَّرَةَ.

But the captain prevented them from doing that because he wanted to save Paul. So he commanded everyone who knew how to swim to swim toward the beach.
وَلَكِنَّ الضَّابِطَ مَنَعَهُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِذْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُنَجِّيَ بَاوُلَ، فَأَمَرَ أَوَّلًا الَّذِينَ يَعْرِفُونَ السِّبَاحَةَ أَنْ يَسْبَحُوا نَحْوَ الشَّاطِئِ،

Then he ordered the rest to hold on to boards or remnants of the ship to arrive to the shore. In this way, we all reached the land in safety.
ثُمَّ أَمَرَ الْبَاقِينَ أَنْ يَتَمَسَّكُوا بِأَلْوَاحٍ مِنَ السَّفِينَةِ أَوْ بِحُطَامِهَا الْبَاقِي لِيَصِلُوا إِلَى الشَّاطِئِ، وَبِهَذِهِ الطَّرِيقَةِ وَصَلْنَا جَمِيعًا إِلَى بَرِّ الْأَمَانِ سَالِمِينَ.
