First Corinthians

«   Chapter 12   »

1
Regarding spiritual matters, I do not want you to be jahil, brothers.
وَبِصَدَدِ الْأُمُورِ الرُّوحِيَّةِ، فَلَا أُرِيدُ لَكُمْ أَنْ تَكُونُوا جَاهِلِينَ، أَيُّهَا الْإِخْوَةُ.

You know that you went astray and worshiped dumb idols when you were polytheists.
تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ ضَالِّينَ تَعْبُدُونَ أَصْنَامًا صَامِتَةً عِنْدَمَا كُنْتُمْ مُشْرِكِينَ،

But I tell you that no one guided by Ruh Allah says: "Isa is cursed." And no one testifies, saying "Isa is my mawla" except by the guidance of holy Ruh Allah.
لَكِنَّنِي أُخْبِرُكُمْ أَنَّ لَا أَحَدَ بِرُشْدِ رُوحِ اللهِ يَقُولُ: «عِيسَى مَلْعُونٌ،» وَلَا يَشْهَدُ أَحَدٌ قَائِلًا: «عِيسَى هُوَ مَوْلَايَ،» إِلَّا بِإِرْشَادِ رُوحِ اللهِ الْقُدُّوسِ.

Gifts differ, but Al-Ruh is one.
تَخْتَلِفُ الْهِبَاتُ، وَلَكِنَّ الرُّوحَ وَاحِدٌ،

Ways of serving differ, but our mawla is one.
وَتَخْتَلِفُ الْخِدْمَاتُ، وَلَكِنَّ مَوْلَانَا وَاحِدٌ،

Kinds of work differ, but Allah who does everything in everyone is one.
وَتَخْتَلِفُ أَنْوَاعُ الْعَمَلِ، وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ فِي الْجَمِيعِ وَاحِدٌ،

Allah gives each one a gift in which Ruh Allah is manifested for shared benefit.
كَمَا أَنَّ اللهَ يَهَبُ لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ هِبَةً يَتَجَلَّى فِيهَا رُوحُ اللهِ لِلْمَنْفَعَةِ الْمُشْتَرَكَةِ،

Through Ruh Allah, he gives one wise words, as he gives another words of knowledge by the same Ruh.
فَبِوَاسِطَةِ رُوحِ اللهِ، يَهَبُ لِوَاحِدٍ الْكَلَامَ الْحَكِيمَ، كَمَا يَهَبُ لِآخَرَ كَلَامَ الْمَعْرِفَةِ بِنَفْسِ الرُّوحِ،

To another he gives trust by the same Ruh, and to another gifts of healing by the one Ruh.
وَلِآخَرَ التَّوَكُّلَ بِنَفْسِ الرُّوحِ، وَلِآخَرَ هِبَاتِ الشِّفَاءِ بِالرُّوحِ الْوَاحِدِ،

To another he gives the ability to bring ayat, to another prophesying, to another distinguishing of spirits and jinn, to another speaking in various tongues, and to another interpretation of those tongues.
وَلِآخَرَ الْإِتْيَانَ بِآيَاتٍ، وَلِآخَرَ التَّنَبُّؤَ، وَلِآخَرَ تَمْيِيزَ الْأَرْوَاحِ وَالْجِنِّ، وَلِآخَرَ النُّطْقَ بِأَلْسِنَةٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ، وَلِآخَرَ تَفْسِيرَ تِلْكَ الْأَلْسِنَةِ،

These all are from the working of the same one Ruh, who distributes to each believer as he wills.
وَهَذِهِ كُلُّهَا مِنْ عَمَلِ نَفْسِ الرُّوحِ الْوَاحِدِ، اَلَّذِي يُقَسِّمُ لِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ كَمَا يَشَاءُ.

Just as the body is one, though the members are many, and the many members all form one body, so is Al-Masih.
كَمَا الْجَسَدُ وَاحِدٌ مَعَ أَنَّ أَعْضَاءَهُ كَثِيرَةٌ، وَالْأَعْضَاءُ الْكَثِيرَةُ تُشَكِّلُ جَمِيعًا جَسَدًا وَاحِدًا، فَهَكَذَا الْمَسِيحُ،

By one Ruh, we were all washed to belong to one body, whether we were Yahud or Greeks, slaves or free, and we were all given drink from one Ruh.
فَبِرُوحٍ وَاحِدٍ اغْتَسَلْنَا جَمِيعًا انْتِمَاءً إِلَى جَسَدٍ وَاحِدٍ، سَوَاءٌ أَكُنَّا يَهُودًا أَمْ إِغْرِيقًا، عَبِيدًا أَمْ أَحْرَارًا، كَمَا سُقِينَا جَمِيعًا مِنَ الرُّوحِ الْوَاحِدِ.

The body is not one member only, but rather many members.
لَيْسَ الْجَسَدُ عُضْوًا وَاحِدًا فَقَطْ بَلْ أَعْضَاءً كَثِيرَةً،

If the foot said, "I am not a hand, so I am not part of the body," that saying would not make it separate from the body.
فَلَوْ قَالَتِ الْقَدَمُ: «لَسْتُ يَدًا، لِذَلِكَ لَسْتُ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ،» فَإِنَّ قَوْلَهَا ذَلِكَ لَا يَجْعَلُهَا تَنْفَصِلُ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ،

And if the ear said, "I am not an eye, so I am not part of the body," that saying would not make it separate from the body.
وَلَوْ قَالَتِ الْأُذُنُ: «لَسْتُ عَيْنًا، لِذَلِكَ لَسْتُ مِنَ الْجَسَدِ،» فَإِنَّ قَوْلَهَا ذَلِكَ لَا يَجْعَلُهَا تَنْفَصِلُ عَنِ الْجَسَدِ.

If the whole body were an eye, how would it hear? If everything were an ear, how would it smell?
فَلَوْ كَانَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ عَيْنًا، كَيْفَ يَسْمَعُ؟ وَلَوْ كَانَ الْكُلُّ أُذُنًا، فَكَيْفَ يَشُمُّ؟

But Allah arranged each of the members in the body as he willed.
لَكِنَّ اللهَ رَتَّبَ كُلَّ عُضْوٍ مِنَ الْأَعْضَاءِ فِي الْجَسَدِ كَمَا شَاءَ.

If the whole body were one member, what kind of a body would that be?
فَلَوْ كَانَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ عُضْوًا وَاحِدًا، فَأَيُّ جَسَدٍ هَذَا؟

The members are many and the body is one.
فَإِنَّ الْأَعْضَاءَ كَثِيرَةٌ وَالْجَسَدُ وَاحِدٌ.

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor the head to the feet, "I do not need you."
لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ الْعَيْنُ أَنْ تَقُولَ لِلْيَدِ: «لَا أَحْتَاجُ إِلَيْكِ،» وَلَا الرَّأْسُ لِلْقَدَمَيْنِ: «لَا أَحْتَاجُ إْلَيْكُمَا،»

Rather, the members in the body that seem weaker are necessary.
بَلِ الْأَعْضَاءُ الَّتِي تَبْدُو أَضْعَفَ فِي الْجَسَدِ هِيَ ضَرُورِيَّةٌ،

The members that we consider less honorable we treat with more honor. The ones of which we are ashamed we clothe with more modesty.
وَالْأَعْضَاءُ الَّتِي نَحْسَبُهَا أَقَلَّ شَرَفًا نُعَامِلُهَا بِشَرَفٍ أَكْبَرَ، وَالَّتِي نَسْتَحِي مِنْهَا، نَكْسُوهَا بِاحْتِشَامٍ أَكْثَرَ،

The good-looking members do not need that. So Allah has made the body integrated, so that the members that are lacking would be honored.
أَمَّا الْأَعْضَاءُ الْحَسَنَةُ الطَّلْعَةِ، فَلَيْسَتْ لَهَا حَاجَةٌ بِذَلِكَ. إِذًا، قَدْ كَوَّنَ اللهُ الْجَسَدَ بِشَكْلٍ مُتَكَامِلٍ حَتَّى تُكَرَّمَ الْأَعْضَاءُ النَّاقِصَةُ،

This is so that divisions would not happen between members of the body, but rather the members would take care of each other.
لِئَلَّا يَحْدُثَ انْقِسَامٌ بَيْنَ أَعْضَاءِ الْجَسَدِ، بَلْ يَعْتَنِي كُلُّ الْأَعْضَاءِ بَعْضُهَا بِبَعْضٍ.

If one of the members suffers, all the members suffer with him. If one of them receives honor, all members rejoice with him.
فَإِنْ عَانَى عُضْوٌ مِنَ الْأَعْضَاءِ، تُعَانِي مَعَهُ جَمِيعُ الْأَعْضَاءِ، وَإِنْ نَالَ أَحَدُهَا شَرَفًا تَفْرَحُ جَمِيعًا مَعَهُ.

You are the body of Al-Masih, and every individual among you is a member of that body.
إِنَّكُمْ أَنْتُمْ جَسَدُ الْمَسِيحِ وَكُلُّ فَرْدٍ مِنْكُمْ عُضْوٌ فِي ذَلِكَ الْجَسَدِ.

Allah has designated some of the jama'a of chosen people: first messengers, second those who have the gift of prophesying, third teachers, then those who do miracles, then those who have gifts of healing, helping, arranging matters, and various tongues.
لَقَدْ عَيَّنَ اللهُ الْبَعْضَ مِنْ جَمَاعَةِ الْمُصْطَفَيْنَ: اَلْمُرْسَلِينَ أَوَّلًا، وَذَوِي هِبَةِ التَّنَبُّؤِ ثَانِيًا، وَالْمُعَلِّمِينَ ثَالِثًا، ثُمَّ ذَوِي الْآيَاتِ، ثُمَّ ذَوِي هِبَاتِ الشِّفَاءِ وَالْعَوْنِ وَتَدْبِيرِ الشُّؤُونِ وَالْأَلْسِنَةِ الْمُخْتَلِفَةِ.

Is everyone a messenger? Does everyone have the gift of prophesying? Is everyone a teacher? Can everyone do miracles?
هَلِ الْجَمِيعُ مُرْسَلُونَ؟ هَلِ الْجَمِيعُ ذَوُو هِبَةِ التَّنَبُّؤِ؟ هَلِ الْجَمِيعُ مُعَلِّمُونَ؟ هَلْ لَدَى الْجَمِيعِ الْإِتْيَانُ بِآيَاتٍ؟

Does everyone have gifts of healing? Does everyone speak in another tongue beside his own tongue? Does everyone interpret these tongues?
هَلْ لَدَى الْجَمِيعِ هِبَاتُ الشِّفَاءِ؟ هَلْ يَتَكَلَّمُ الْجَمِيعُ بِأَلْسِنَةٍ غَيْرِ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ؟ هَلْ يُفَسِّرُ الْجَمِيعُ هَذِهِ الْأَلْسِنَةَ؟

Desire the greater gifts. And I will show you a better way.
فَارْغَبُوا فِي الْهِبَاتِ الْعُظْمَى. وَسَأُرِيكُمْ طَرِيقًا أَفْضَلَ:
