«   Chapter 13   »

1
Let everyone be submissive to the ruling authorities, since all authority is from Allah. Everyone official has been appointed by Allah.
2
Whoever resists authorities resists the arrangement of Allah. Whoever does that brings torment on himself.
3
Whoever does what is good does not fear the rulers. Those that do evil do. Do you want to have no fear of the authorities? Do what is good, and they will commend you.
4
The authorities serve Allah for your good, but if you do evil, fear them. They serve Allah with their effective, avenging sword of the anger of Allah against those who practice evil.
5
Submission is necessary, not only to avoid the anger of Allah, but because of the conscience also.
6
So pay taxes, for the authorities are servants of Allah as they do their work.
7
Give everyone what he should have: taxes to those who should get taxes, tribute to those who should get tribute, fear to those who should get fear, and respect to those who should get respect.
8
Do not be in debt to anyone at all, except for the debt of love. Whoever loves has fulfilled all the sharia.
9
All the commandments of the kitab - do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not testify falsely, do not be covetous, and every other command - are summarized in this saying: love your neighbor as yourself.
10
Love does not harm a neighbor, so love is the fulfillment of the sharia.
11
Do all this, knowing that the time has come for you to wake up from sleep. The day of our salvation is nearer to us now than it was the day we trusted.
12
Night is almost over. The sunrise of the day is now. So let us take off the deeds of darkness and dress ourselves with the armor of light.
13
Let us walk as is appropriate for the day, not in moral depravity, drunkenness, adultery, immorality, strife, and envy.
14
Instead, dress yourselves with our mawla Isa Al-Masih, and do not let the passions of human nature have a place.
