«   Chapter 7   »

1
Brothers who know the sharia, do you not know that its authority rules over Bani Adam while they remain alive?
2
A married woman is obligated under the sharia to her husband while he remains alive. But if the husband dies, the sharia frees her from the bonds of marriage.
3
If she is joined to another man while her husband is alive, she is an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is free from the sharia of adultery, and she is allowed to be joined to another man.
4
So, believing brothers, you also have died with regard to the sharia through the body of Al-Masih, so you can be committed to another person, the one who was resurrected alive from among the dead so that you would produce fruit for Allah.
5
When we were people of human nature, our guilt-producing passions were effective in our members through the sharia, to produce fruit for death.
6
But now, we have been made free from the sharia, since we have died with regard to what used to enslave us, so that we can worship Allah by Ruh Allah in our new lives, not by the sharia in our old doctrines.
7
So what should we say? Is the sharia sin? May Allah forbid it! But if not for the sharia, I would have not known what sin is. I would not have known lust unless the sharia had said, "Do not lust."
8
But sin took advantage of the matter, and stirred up in me all kinds of lust. Sin without sharia is dead.
9
I was alive in the absence of the sharia, but when it came, sin was resurrected alive.
10
I died, and the thing intended for life became the cause of death.
11
For sin took advantage of it, deceived me, and killed me through it.
12
So the revealed sharia is holy, and its commandment is holy, just, and righteous.
13
Did what is righteous become death to me? May Allah forbid it! Sin used what is righteous to produce fruit for death in me so that it would appear as sin. In this way, the extreme ugliness of sin would be shown through the commandment.
14
We know that the sharia is spiritual, but I have a human nature and have been sold as a slave to sins.
15
I do not understand what I do. I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.
16
But if I do what I do not want, that is my confirmation of the goodness of the sharia.
17
So I am not the one now who does that. Sin living in me is what does it.
18
I know that no goodness lives in me, that is, in my human nature. The desire to do what is good is present in me, but I cannot do what is good.
19
I do not do the good I want, but I continue in the exact evil I do not want.
20
If I do what I do not want, it is not I that do it, but sin living in me is what does it.
21
So I have discovered this principle: when I want to do what is good, evil is present by me.
22
Within me, I rejoice in the sharia.
23
But I see in the members of my body another principle fighting against the principle that my thinking approves of. It makes me a prisoner to the authority of sin living in my members.
24
Woe to me for my misery! Who will free me from my imprisonment in this body of death?
25
I praise and thank Allah through our mawla Isa Al-Masih! So I am a slave to the sharia of Allah according to my thinking, and a slave to the authority of sin according to my human nature.
