Matthew

«   Chapter 20   »

1
"The kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a vineyard. He went out at sunrise to hire laborers for his vineyard.
2
He agreed with the laborers to pay them one dinar per day. And he sent them into his vineyard.
3
Then he went out three hours later. He found other laborers standing in the market.
4
He told them: Go to my vineyard, and I will pay you what you deserve. So they went.
5
He went out at noon and midafternoon and did the same thing.
6
Before sunset, he went out and found other laborers standing. He asked them: Why are you standing here all day without work?
7
They said: No one has hired us. He told them: You also go to the vineyard.
8
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his manager: Call the laborers and pay them their wages, starting with the last laborers and ending with the first laborers.
9
The last laborers, whom he had hired before sunset, each received a dinar.
10
When the first laborers came, they expected that they would receive more. But each one of them received a dinar also.
11
When they received the dinar, they complained to the owner of the vineyard. They said:
12
These laborers only worked one hour, but you made them equal to us who bore the heat and exhaustion of the whole day.
13
The owner of the vineyard answered one of them: I did not cheat you, my brother. Did we not agree on a dinar?
14
Take what you are owed and Allah be with you. I want to give the last one the same wage that I give you.
15
Am I not free to do what I want with my money? Or is your eye evil because I am generous?
16
Thus the last ones will be first, and the first ones will be last."
17
As they were going up to Al-Quds, Isa talked alone with his twelve hawariyun on the road,
18
"We are going up to Al-Quds, and Sayyid Al-Bashar will be delivered to the leading ahbar and the fuqaha. They will condemn him to be executed.
19
They will deliver him to the nations of the kuffar, who will mock him, whip him, and crucify him. But on the third day, he will be resurrected alive."
20
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee and her two sons came to him and bowed in front of him. She asked him for a favor.
21
He said to her, "What do you want?" She answered, "Command that one son of mine will sit on your right and the other on your left in your kingdom."
22
Isa answered her sons, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I will drink?" They answered, "We are able."
23
He told them, "You will drink the cup of my pains, but the privilege of sitting on my right and my left is not something I grant. My Malik Al-Wadud grants that to the people he has chosen."
24
The rest of the ten hawariyun heard about that, and they were angry at the two brothers.
25
So Isa called them and told them, "You know that the nations of the kuffar rule over their nations, and their leaders control those nations.
26
But you should not be that way. If a person wants greatness among you, he should be your servant.
27
If a person wants to be first, he should be your slave.
28
This is like Sayyid Al-Bashar. He did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve them, and to sacrifice his life as a ransom for many people."
29
When they left Jericho, large crowds accompanied them.
30
Two blind men sitting by the road heard that Isa was passing by them. They shouted, "Our master, Ibn Dawood, have mercy on us!"
31
The crowds rebuked them so that they would be quiet. But they shouted even louder, "Our master, Ibn Dawood, have mercy on us!"
32
Isa stopped and called them. He said, "What do you want from me?"
33
They told him, "Our master, we want you to open our eyes."
34
Isa had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Then immediately they could see again. So they followed him.
